Ekadashi is kept on the day before Dwadashi is current at sunrise, so that the fast can be broken (parana) within Dwadashi. Usually that is simply the day Ekadashi is current at sunrise; when Ekadashi spans two sunrises or is lost between them, this rule decides the day.

About Amalaki Ekadashi· महत्व

Devotees worship the amla tree, bathe with amla and eat it after the fast. In Varanasi the same day is Rangbhari Ekadashi, when Shiva and Parvati's procession begins Kashi's Holi.

How to keep the fast· विधि

  • Eat a single sattvic meal without grains on Dashami, the day before.
  • On Ekadashi avoid rice, wheat, pulses and beans; keep a full fast, a water-only fast or a fruit-and-milk (phalahar) fast as health allows.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, a ghee lamp and yellow flowers; read the Ekadashi katha or the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • Stay awake in bhajan or japa through the night if you can.
  • Break the fast (parana) on Dwadashi after sunrise, after the first quarter of Dwadashi (Hari Vasara) and before Dwadashi ends.
