Ganesh Chaturthi 2026गणेश चतुर्थी

Hindu date: Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi.

It is kept on the day Chaturthi covers Madhyahna (midday), the time Ganesha is believed to have been born and the preferred time for installing the idol.

Dates are calculated for New Delhi. In other cities, and especially outside India, the tithi changes at a different local time, so a festival can fall a day earlier or later. Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. How we calculate

Parvati shaped Ganesha from the paste she bathed with and set him to guard her door. When he stopped Shiva from entering, Shiva cut off his head, then restored him with an elephant's head and made him the first to be worshipped.

Lokmanya Tilak turned the festival into a public celebration in 1893, and Mumbai and Pune still hold the largest. It is considered unlucky to look at the moon on this night, after the story of Krishna and the Syamantaka jewel.
