Hindu date: Shravana Purnima.
Rakhi is tied on Purnima in the afternoon (Aparahna) and never during Bhadra. If Bhadra covers that afternoon and Purnima lasts at least three muhurtas past the next sunrise, rakhi is tied the next morning.
Dates are calculated for New Delhi; elsewhere they can fall a day earlier or later. Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. How we calculate
About Raksha Bandhan· महत्व
Several stories lie behind the thread. Indrani tied a protective thread on Indra before his battle with the asuras. Draupadi tore her sari to bind Krishna's bleeding finger, and Krishna protected her honour in the Kaurava court.
The same full moon is Shravani Upakarma, when Brahmins renew the sacred thread, and Narali Purnima on the Konkan coast, when fishing communities offer a coconut to the sea.
How Raksha Bandhan is observed· विधि
- Prepare a thali with roli, rice, a lamp, sweets and the rakhi.
- Apply tilak, perform aarti and tie the rakhi outside Bhadra.
- Brothers give a gift and a promise of protection.
- Renew the sacred thread (Upakarma / Avani Avittam) if it is your tradition.
