Varuthini Ekadashi dates· तिथियाँ

Why this date?· तिथि निर्णय

Hindu date: Vaishakha Krishna Ekadashi.

Ekadashi is kept on the day before Dwadashi is current at sunrise, so that the fast can be broken (parana) within Dwadashi. Usually that is simply the day Ekadashi is current at sunrise; when Ekadashi spans two sunrises or is lost between them, this rule decides the day.

Dates are calculated for New Delhi; elsewhere they can fall a day earlier or later. Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. How we calculate

About Varuthini Ekadashi· महत्व

The Bhavishya Purana compares its merit to great acts of charity and names kings such as Mandhata who were blessed by keeping it. Many give food, water and grain in the summer heat.

How to keep the fast· विधि

  • Eat a single sattvic meal without grains on Dashami, the day before.
  • On Ekadashi avoid rice, wheat, pulses and beans; keep a full fast, a water-only fast or a fruit-and-milk (phalahar) fast as health allows.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, a ghee lamp and yellow flowers; read the Ekadashi katha or the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • Stay awake in bhajan or japa through the night if you can.
