About Mahashivratri· महत्व
Tradition links the night to Shiva's appearance as an endless pillar of light, the first Jyotirlinga, and to his marriage with Parvati. Temples stay open all night, and devotees worship in four parts (prahars) from evening to dawn, chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
The fast is broken the next morning after sunrise. Kashi Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and the other Jyotirlinga temples see some of the largest gatherings of the year.
How Mahashivratri is observed· विधि
- Fast through the day (water-only, or fruit and milk).
- Bathe the Shivling with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, and offer bel leaves and dhatura.
- Keep a night vigil (jagran) with the Shiv Chalisa, Om Namah Shivaya and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.
- Worship in each of the four prahars of the night if you can.
- Break the fast after sunrise the next day.
