Hindu date: Ashwin Shukla Dashami.

It is kept on the day Dashami covers Aparahna (the afternoon), the time of the Vijay Muhurat.

Dates are calculated for New Delhi. In other cities, and especially outside India, the tithi changes at a different local time, so a festival can fall a day earlier or later. Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. How we calculate

The Ramlila ends with the burning of the effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna. The day is also linked with the Pandavas, who hid their weapons in a shami tree during their year in hiding and recovered them on Vijayadashami, so shami and Aparajita are worshipped and weapons and tools are honoured.

It is one of the most auspicious days to begin something new. In Kerala children begin their education (Vidyarambham), Mysuru holds its Dasara procession, and in Bengal the Goddess is immersed on Bijoya Dashami.
