Parvati is said to have performed penance through many births to win Shiva, and Teej celebrates their union. Women dress in green, apply mehndi, receive sindhara gifts from their parents' home and sing teej songs on swings. It is celebrated most widely in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, with ghewar as the festive sweet.
