Why this date?· तिथि निर्णय
Hindu date: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada to Navami.
It begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada with Ghatasthapana in the morning, and ends with Ram Navami; the fast is broken (parana) the next day.
Dates are calculated for New Delhi. In other cities, and especially outside India, the tithi changes at a different local time, so a festival can fall a day earlier or later. Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. How we calculate
About Chaitra Navratri· महत्व
On the first day a kalash is installed (Ghatasthapana) and barley is sown beside it. Each day honours one form of the Goddess: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.
The first day is also the start of the Vikram Samvat new year, celebrated as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. The ninth day is Ram Navami, and many families perform Kanya Puja on Ashtami or Navami.
How Chaitra Navratri is observed· विधि
- Install the kalash and sow barley (jaware) on the first morning.
- Keep an akhand jyoti (unbroken lamp) burning for the nine days.
- Fast, or eat only satvik phalahar food.
- Read the Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmya.
- Worship young girls as forms of the Devi (Kanya Puja) on Ashtami or Navami, then break the fast.
